Aspidocrinus was named by Hall (1858) [Not cyrtocrinid "Aspidocrinus" from Sepkoski compendium, which was a mis-spelling of Apsidocrinus Jaekel 1907]. It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type is Aspidocrinus scutelliformis.

It was assigned to Crinoidea by Ubaghs and Moore (1978).
