Sphenothallus was named by Hall (1847) [Sepkoski's age data: O Trem-u C Bash-l]. It is not extant. Its type is Sphenothallus angustifolius.

It was assigned to Ctenoconulariinae by Bayer et al. (1956); and to Scyphozoa by Sepkoski (2002).
