Ectypodus laytoni was named by Jepsen (1940). Its type locality is Princeton Quarry, which is in a Tiffanian terrestrial horizon in the Fort Union Formation of Wyoming.
It was recombined as Parectypodus laytoni by Sloan (1966), Russell (1967), Wolberg (1979), Rose (1981) and Sloan (1981).
