Archaeolafoea was named by Chapman (1919) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm uMid-m O Cara-m Sepkoski's reference number: 2]. Its type is Archaeolafoea longicornis.

It was assigned to Chaunograptidae by Rickards et al. (1990); to Hydroida by Sepkoski (2002); to Dithecodendridae by Maletz (2014); and to Dithecoidea by LoDuca and Kramer (2014).
