Taxonomy

Heptacodon armatus was named by Marsh (1894) [synonymy of genus with Leptomeryx suggested by Heaton and Emry 1996]. It is the type species of Heptacodon, Elomeryx.

It was recombined as Anthracotherium armatum by Matthew (1899); it was considered a nomen dubium by Matthew (1909); it was recombined as Elomeryx armatus by Marsh (1894), Hay (1902), Troxell (1921), Hay (1930), Scott (1940), Macdonald (1956) and Kron and Manning (1998).

Synonyms

Elomeryx brachystylus was named by Troxell (1921) ["error typog."].

It was synonymized subjectively with Elomeryx brachyrhynchus by Scott (1940); it was synonymized subjectively with Elomeryx armatus by Macdonald (1956).
Elomeryx mitis was named by Marsh (1894).

It was recombined as Anthracotherium mitis by Matthew (1899); it was considered a nomen dubium by Matthew (1909); it was synonymized subjectively with Elomeryx armatus by Scott (1940) and Macdonald (1956).
Hyopotamus brachyrhynchus was named by Osborn and Wortman (1894). Its type locality is Indian Stronghold (Protoceras Channel), which is in a Whitneyan fluvial sandstone in the Brule Formation of South Dakota.

It was recombined as Ancodus brachyrhynchus by Scott (1894), Lambe (1908), Gregory (1910), Cook (1912) and Woodward (1923); it was recombined as Ancodon brachyrhynchus by Matthew (1901), Hay (1902), Matthew (1909) and Gregory (1920); it was recombined as Brachyodus brachyrhynchus by Abel (1914) and Weber and Abel (1928); it was recombined as Elomeryx brachyrhynchus by Troxell (1921), Hay (1930) and Scott (1940); it was recombined as Bothriodon brachyrhynchus by Stock (1935) and Scott (1937); it was synonymized subjectively with Elomeryx armatus by Macdonald (1956).
