Parathalassiini was named by Chvála (1981). It is extant.

It was reranked as the tribe Parathalassinae by Nel et al. (2016); it was reranked as the subfamily Parathalassiinae by Cumming and Greenwalt (2022).

It was assigned to Microphorinae by Grimaldi and Cumming (1999); and to Dolichopodidae by Nel et al. (2016) and Cumming and Greenwalt (2022).
