Discophyllum was named by Hall (1847) [Sepkoski's age data: O Cara-m Sepkoski's reference number: 2]. It is not extant. Its type is Discophyllum peltatum.

It was assigned to Problematica by Andrews (1970); to Hydroida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Paropsonemidae by Schroeder et al. (2018).
