Taxonomy
Sunkahetanka pahinsintewakpa was named by Macdonald (1963). Its type specimen is SDSM 53325, a mandible (complete right ramus), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Sharps (SDSM V-5361), which is in a Geringian terrestrial horizon in the Sharps Formation of South Dakota.
It was synonymized subjectively with Enhydrocyon oregonensis by Swisher (1982); it was recombined as Enhydrocyon pahinsintewakpa by Wang (1994), Hayes (2000) and Wang et al. (2008).
