Benedenius was named by Traquair (1877) [Sepkoski's age data: C l Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. Its type is Palaeoniscus deneensis.

It was assigned to Palaeonisciformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Styracopteridae by Sallan and Coates (2013) and Mottequin et al. (2015).
