Petalopleura was named by Hou and Bergstrom (1997). It is not extant. It was considered monophyletic by Lerosey-Aubril et al. (2017).

It was reranked as the subclass Petalopleura by Mayers et al. (2019).

It was assigned to Artiopoda by Lerosey-Aubril et al. (2017); and to Nektaspida by Mayers et al. (2019).
