Prothyracodon uintensis was named by Peterson (1919). It is the type species of Epitriplopus.
It was recombined as Epitriplopus uintensis by Wood (1927), Radinsky (1967), Black (1979), Wilson and Schiebout (1984) and Prothero (1998).
