Taxonomy
Equus complicatus was named by Leidy (1858) [replacement name for "Equus americanus" of Leidy 1847].

It was synonymized subjectively with Equus major by Leidy (1869); it was recombined as Onager (Hesperhippus) complicatus by Quinn (1957).
