Equus fraternus was named by Leidy (1858) [made type of subgenus Tomolabis by Cope 1892 - no, Tomolabis was originally a distinct genus, not a subgenus. Corrected in taxonomic list.].

It was recombined as Tomolabis fraternus by Cope (1892); it was synonymized subjectively with Equus complicatus by Allen (1926), Hay (1930) and Savage (1951); it was recombined as Onager fraternus by Quinn (1957).
