Taxonomy
Equus niobrarensis was named by Hay (1913). Its type specimen is USNM 4999, a skull, and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was synonymized subjectively with Equus excelsus by Barbour and Schultz (1937); it was synonymized subjectively with Equus scotti by Lundelius (1984) and Winans (1989); it was synonymized subjectively with Equus laurentius by Harris (1993).
