Melanorrhoeoxylon cacharense was named by Prakash and Tripathi (1976). It is not extant. Its type locality is Hailakandi, which is in a Miocene/Miocene coastal sandstone in the Tipam Formation of India.
It was recombined as Glutoxylon cacharense by Guleria (1984) and Srivastava (1991).
