Eucastor tortus
Taxonomy
Castor (Eucastor) tortus was named by Leidy (1858) [subgenus Eucastor]. Its type specimen is USNM 11020, a partial skull (partial palate and rostrum with incisors and right and left P4-M3), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Niobrara River (coll. Hayden 1857), which is in a Barstovian/Clarendonian terrestrial horizon in the Loup Fork Formation of Nebraska. It is the type species of Eucastor.
It was recombined as Dipoides tortus by Matthew and Gidley (1904) and Matthew (1909); it was recombined as Eucastor tortus by Allen (1877), Hay (1902), Matthew (1902), Stirton (1935), Voorhies (1990) and Korth (2008).
