Eucastor tortus
Taxonomy
Castor (Eucastor) tortus was named by Leidy (1858) [subgenus Eucastor]. Its type specimen is USNM 11020, a partial skull (partial palate and rostrum with incisors and right and left P4-M3), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Niobrara River (coll. Hayden 1857), which is in a Barstovian/Clarendonian terrestrial horizon in the Loup Fork Formation of Nebraska. It is the type species of Eucastor.
It was recombined as Dipoides tortus by Matthew and Gidley (1904), Matthew (1909); it was recombined as Eucastor tortus by Allen (1877), Hay (1902), Matthew (1902), Stirton (1935), Voorhies (1990), Korth (2008).
