Taxonomy
Nuphar carlquistii was named by DeVore et al. (2015). Its type specimen is SR 02-17-03 A&B, a seed/fruit, and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Republic, locality B4131, which is in a Ypresian lacustrine - large mudstone in the Klondike Mountain Formation of Washington.

tapering apically, ground tissue of tepals containing many large (0.8–1 mm) and small (0.1–0.2 mm) clusters of sclereids; fruit wall up to 2.5 mm thick, parenchymatous with numerous small astrosclereids scattered throughout; at least 16 stamens present, stamens laminar, up to 7 mm long (incomplete) and 1 mm across; seed masses containing several hundred seeds embedded in compact matrix; seeds 4–5 mm long # 3–4 mm wide; oval to barrel shaped, anatropous, operculate; prominent raphe ridge along one margin; seed coat of small pentagonal cells with straight anticlinal cell margins.
