Barbourofelis whitfordi
Taxonomy
Eusmilus whitfordi was named by Barbour and Cook (1915). Its type specimen is UNSM 7-2-4-13, a mandible, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Whitford's Quarry No. 2, which is in a Clarendonian terrestrial horizon in the Ash Hollow Formation of Nebraska.
It was recombined as Megantereon whitfordi by Gregory (1942); it was recombined as Albanosmilus whitfordi by Kitts (1957); it was recombined as Sansanosmilus whitfordi by Mawby (1965); it was recombined as Barbourofelis whitfordi by Schultz et al. (1970), Baskin (1981), Voorhies (1990) and Tseng et al. (2010).
