Hylopus caudifer was named by Dawson (1895). It is considered to be a form taxon.

It was recombined as Asperipes caudifer by Matthew (1903), Matthew (1904) and Hay (1930); it was recombined as Pseudobradypus caudifer by Haubold (1971).
