Gnomomys was named by Wilson (1968). It is not extant. Its type is Gnomomys saltus.
It was synonymized subjectively with Copemys by McKenna and Bell (1997); it was synonymized subjectively with Tregomys by Voorhies (1990), Dalquest et al. (1996) and Korth (1998).
It was assigned to Cricetidae by Wilson (1968).
