Ovatoscutum was named by Glaessner and Wade (1966) [Sepkoski's age data: V u]. It is not extant. Its type is Ovatoscutum concentricum.

It was assigned to Hydrozoa by Sepkoski (2002); and to Metazoa by Erwin et al. (2011).
