Asaphus seminiferus was named by Phillips (1836).

It was recombined as Griffithides seminiferus by Woodward (1883); it was recombined as Metaphillipsia seminifera by Reed (1943); it was recombined as Eocyphinium seminiferum by Osmólska (1970) and Tilsley and Owens (2003).
