Taxonomy
Lophiodon nanus was named by Marsh (1871) [also said to be 1872]. It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type specimen is YPM 11080, a maxilla (fragments of both upper jaws with all the cheek-teeth represented on the right side), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Grizzly Buttes, which is in a Bridgerian terrestrial horizon in the Bridger Formation of Wyoming.

It was synonymized subjectively with Helaletes boops by Wortman and Earle (1893); it was recombined as Helaletes nanus by Hay (1902), Peterson (1919), Troxell (1922), Wood (1934), Radinsky (1963), Gazin (1976), Schoch (1984), Stucky (1984), Schoch (1989), McCarroll et al.
