Gerastos couvinensis was named by Van Viersen and Prescher (2010) [Paratypes
Two cranidia (IRSNB a12725, a12733), two librigenae (IRSNB a12719, a12720), one pygidium (IRSNB a12721)]. Its type specimen is NHMM 2009070, an exoskeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Couvinoise quarry, which is in an Eifelian/Givetian marine limestone in the Hanonet Formation of Belgium.
