Herpetotherium fuzax was named by Cope (1873) [genotype; originally spelt "fuzax"]. It is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Peratherium fugax by Cope (1884), Hay (1930), Galbreath (1953), White (1954), Russell (1984) and Ostrander (1987); it was recombined as Didelphis fugax by Hay (1901) and Hay (1902); it was corrected as Herpetotherium fugax by Cope (1873), Korth (2018), Lofgren et al. (2020) and Korth et al. (2022).
It was recombined as Peratherium fugax by Cope (1884), Hay (1930), Galbreath (1953), White (1954), Russell (1984) and Ostrander (1987); it was recombined as Didelphis fugax by Hay (1901) and Hay (1902); it was corrected as Herpetotherium fugax by Cope (1873), Korth (2018), Lofgren et al.
