Kimberella was named by Glaessner (1959) [Sepkoski's age data: V u]. Its type is Kimberella quadrata.

It was assigned to Mollusca by Fedonkin and Waggoner (1997); to Medusae by Sepkoski (2002); and to Kimberellomorpha by Erwin et al. (2011).
