Hexameryx simpsoni was named by White (1941) [genotype]. Its type locality is Agrico Pierce Mine, which is in a Hemphillian terrestrial horizon in Florida. It is the type species of Hexameryx.
It was recombined as Hexobelomeryx simpsoni by Simpson (1945) and Ahearn (1988).
