Gonatodus macrolepis was named by Traquair (1877). Its type specimen is NMS 1926.57.20 and NHMUK P.11648, part and counterpart, a skeleton (Imperfect fish), and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Pseudogonatodus macrolepis by Gardiner (1967).
