Taxonomy
Batacanthus gigas was named by Branson (1916). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Lower Embar fauna, which is in a Roadian offshore shale in the Phosphoria Formation of Wyoming.

It was recombined as Physonemus gigii by Zidek (1976).
