Taxonomy
Systemodon protapirinum was named by Wortman (1896). Its type specimen is AMNH 4460, a maxilla (maxilla with P2-M2 ; mandible with P2-M3.), and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Homogalax protapirinus by Hay (1899), Hay (1902), Radinsky (1963), Gingerich (1991), Colbert and Schoch (1998), Froehlich (1999) and Holbrook et al. (2004).
