D.-X. Yuan et al. 2016 | Vjalovognathidae fam. nov. has an octomembrate apparatus. Segminiscaphate P1 element has a terminal cusp, an inconspicuous free blade and a very thinwalled basal cavity. Cusp is strongly inclined posteriorly. Base of cusp is expanded and not filled. Cavity is large, extends throughout the aboral surface of the platform with a pit under the cusp. Basal cavity and eroded cross of denticles ornamented with fine growth striae. Denticle tips on much of the carina are usually eroded and their tops are flattened off, apparently while the elements were still part of the living animal. Denticles near the anterior of the element have a normally preserved pointed tip. Anterior process of anguliscaphate P2 is bent inward. Cross section of cusp is triangle-shaped. Base of cusp is expanded. However, other parts of basal cavity are closed. M element is makellate. S0 and S3 elements have not yet been recognized. S1 and S2 elements are bipennate. ?S4 element is digyrate. All S elements have thin-walled basal cavity. The poorly preserved S elements generally conform to the octomembrate apparatus. However, they need further research based on complete sets of apparatuses. |
