Taxonomy
Huerfanius rutherfurdi was named by Robinson (1966) [genotype]. It is not extant. Its type locality is Huerfano II, which is in a Bridgerian terrestrial horizon in the Huerfano Formation of Colorado. It is the type species of Huerfanius.
It was synonymized subjectively with Uintanius ameghini by Szalay (1976); it was recombined as Uintanius rutherfurdi by Gingerich (1981), Beard et al. (1992) and Muldoon and Gunnell (2002).
