Taxonomy
Dickinsonia was named by Sprigg (1947) [Sepkoski's age data: ]. Its type is Dickinsonia costata. It is the type genus of Dickinsoniidae.
It was assigned to Dickinsoniidae by Harrington and Moore (1955); to Erniettamorpha by Sepkoski (2002); to Placozoa by Sperling and Vinther (2010); to Dickinsoniomorpha by Erwin et al. (2011) and Darroch et al. (2018); and to Petalonamae by Hoyal Cuthill and Han (2018).
