Onchus peracutus was named by Bryant (1934).

It was recombined as Bryantonchus peracutus by Burrow (2007) and Burrow and Elliott (2023).

Burrow 2007Diplacanthiform acanthodian, bearing fin spines with subcircular cross section; smooth exserted surface sometimes with weak longitudinal ridges on proximal third; short insertion area bearing fine, close-set, parallel ridges which extend for whole length of spine under smooth outer layer forming exserted sur­ face; central pulp cavity enclosed for most of length of trailing edge; rounded-edged, medial channel along trailing edge; wide central pulp canal; outer dentine layer with evenly spaced, narrow longitudinal dentine canals from which fine dentine tubules ra­ diate towards outer surface; highly vascular inner layer overlain by osteodenteons formed round densely distributed longitudinal canals at proximal end, with no boundary between inner and outer layers; rest of spine with boundary between inner and outer lay­ ers, and inner layer with fine dentine tubules radiating from cen­ tral pulp cavity
