Cornutella was named by Ehrenberg (1838) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr R]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Acropyramididae by De Wever et al. (2001); to Nassellaria by Sepkoski (2002); and to Theoperidae by Sharma and Takahashi (2007).
