Phyllozoon was named by Jenkins and Gehling (1978) [Sepkoski's age data: V u]. Its type is Phyllozoon hanseni.

It was assigned to Erniettamorpha by Sepkoski (2002); and to Erniettomorpha by Erwin et al. (2011).
