Epitriplopus medius was named by Peterson (1934). It is the type species of Mesamynodon.
It was recombined as Mesamynodon medius by Peterson (1931) and Scott (1945); it was synonymized subjectively with Epitriplopus uintensis by Radinsky (1967) and Wilson and Schiebout (1984); it was recombined as Hyracodon medius by Rasmussen et al. (1999).
