Taxonomy
Protictis vanvaleni was named by MacIntyre (1966). Its type locality is East Flank Torreon Wash (Upper), which is in a Torrejonian terrestrial horizon in the Nacimiento Formation of New Mexico.
It was recombined as Bryanictis vanvaleni by Rigby (1980); it was recombined as Intyrictis vanvaleni by Gingerich and Winkler (1985), Williamson (1996), Secord (1998) and Meehan and Wilson (2002).
