Taxonomy

Ischyromys typus was named by Leidy (1856) [genotype]. It is a 3D body fossil. It is the type species of Ischyromys.

Synonyms

Ischyromys typus lloydi was named by Troxell (1922).

It was considered an invalid subgroup of Ischyromys typus by Heaton (1996).
Colotaxis cristatus was named by Cope (1873).

It was recombined as Ischyromys cristatus by Matthew (1910); it was synonymized subjectively with Ischyromys typus by Cope (1875), Hay (1902), Matthew (1903), Troxell (1922), Wood (1937), Howe (1966), Black (1968), Wood (1980) and Heaton (1996).
Gymnoptychus chrysodon was named by Cope (1873) [genotype; also said to be 1872].

It was recombined as Ischyromys chrysodon by Cope (1873); it was synonymized subjectively with Ischyromys cristatus by Matthew (1910); it was synonymized subjectively with Ischyromys typus by Cope (1875), Hay (1899), Hay (1902), Troxell (1921), Wood (1937), Howe (1966), Black (1968), Wood (1980) and Heaton (1996).
Ischyromys pliacus was named by Troxell (1922). Its type locality is Cherry Creek, which is in an Orellan terrestrial horizon in Wyoming.

It was synonymized subjectively with Ischyromys typus by Galbreath (1953), Black (1968), Heaton (1993) and Heaton (1996).
Ischyromys troxelli was named by Wood (1937). Its type locality is Sheep Mountain (Middle Oreodon), which is in an Orellan terrestrial horizon in the Brule Formation of South Dakota.

It was synonymized subjectively with Ischyromys typus by Black (1968), Heaton (1993) and Heaton (1996).
