Synthetoceras siouxensis was named by Frick (1937) [subgenus Prosynthetoceras]. Its type locality is Observation Quarry, which is in a Barstovian terrestrial horizon in Nebraska.
It was recombined as Prosynthetoceras siouxensis by Patton (1967); it was recombined as Lambdoceras siouxensis by Tedford et al. (1987) and Prothero (1998).
