Leptochoerus spectabilis

Taxonomy

Leptochoerus spectabilis was named by Leidy (1856) [genotype]. Its type specimen is ANSP 15593, a mandible (mandible fragment with m1-2), and it is a 3D body fossil. It is the type species of Leptochoerus.

Synonyms

Laopithecus robustus was named by Marsh (1875). It is the type species of Laopithecus.

It was recombined as Menotherium robustum by Hay (1902); it was recombined as Leptochoerus robustus by Osborn (1902) and Matthew (1909); it was synonymized subjectively with Leptochoerus spectabilis by Scott (1940), Macdonald (1955) and Edwards (1976).
Leptochoerus gracilis was named by Marsh (1894).

It was synonymized subjectively with Leptochoerus spectabilis by Edwards (1976).

P. Edwards 1976	2/2 and P/3 are tall and single-cusped. P3/ is essentially single-cusped, but with extremely reduced anterior and posterior accessory cusps and a greatly reduced lingual deuterocone.
