Limnocyon potens was named by Matthew (1909). Its type specimen is AMNH 13138, a partial skeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Washakie B (Lower), which is in an Uintan terrestrial horizon in the Washakie Formation of Wyoming.
