Taxonomy

Limnocyon verus was named by Marsh (1872) [genotype]. It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Grizzly Buttes, which is in a Bridgerian terrestrial horizon in the Bridger Formation of Wyoming.

It was recombined as Sinopa verus by Scott (1892); it was recombined as Sinopa vera by Matthew (1899) and Matthew (1901); it was recombined as Stypolophus verus by Hay (1902).

Synonyms

Limnocyon riparius was named by Marsh (1872). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Grizzly Buttes, which is in a Bridgerian terrestrial horizon in the Bridger Formation of Wyoming. It is the type species of Telmatocyon.

It was recombined as Viverravus riparius by Scott (1892); it was recombined as Telmatocyon riparius by Marsh (1899) and Hay (1902); it was synonymized subjectively with Limnocyon verus by Wortman (1902), Matthew (1909), Denison (1938), Gazin (1976) and Gunnell (1998).
Triacodon grandis was named by Marsh (1872).

It was synonymized subjectively with Sinopa major by Thorpe (1923); it was considered a nomen dubium by Matthew (1909); it was synonymized subjectively with Limnocyon verus by Gunnell (1998).
