Taxonomy
Litolestes notissimus was named by Simpson (1936). Its type locality is Scarritt Quarry, which is in a Tiffanian terrestrial horizon in the Melville Formation of Montana.
It was recombined as Litocherus notissimus by Gingerich (1983), Novacek et al. (1985) and Hartman (1986).
