Taxonomy
Blastomeryx wellsi was named by Matthew (1904) [listed as a species of Blastomeryx by Webb 1998a without mention of Patton]. Its type specimen is AMNH 9823, a mandible (fragmentary ramus), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Rosebud Agency Quarry, which is in a Clarendonian/Hemphillian terrestrial horizon in the Ash Hollow Formation of South Dakota.
It was recombined as Longirostromeryx wellsi by Frick (1937), Green (1956), Patton (1969), Webb (1998), Prothero (2007) and Prothero (2008).
