Taxonomy
Felis proterolyncis was named by Savage (1941). Its type locality is Optima, which is in a Hemphillian terrestrial horizon in the Ogallala Formation of Oklahoma.
It was recombined as Lynx proterolyncis by Werdelin (1985) and Seymour (1999).
