Archidiskodon hayi was named by Barbour (1915).
It was recombined as Mammuthus hayi by Webb and Dudley (1995) and Shoshani and Tassy (1996); it was synonymized subjectively with Mammuthus meridionalis by Kurten and Anderson (1980), Lister (1993), Lucas (1996), Lucas and Gonzalez (1996), Lucas et al. (1999) and Agenbroad (2005).
