Taxonomy
Elephas meridionalis was named by Nesti (1825) [European species often treated as senior synonym of M. hayi].

It was recombined as Euelephas meridionalis by Osborn (1918); it was recombined as Archidiskodon meridionalis by Osborn (1924); it was recombined as Archidiscodon meridionalis by Melentis (1966); it was recombined as Mammuthus meridionalis by Maglio (1973), Kurten and Anderson (1980), Jefferson and Remeika (1994), Shoshani and Tassy (1996), Agenbroad (2005), Palombo (2005) and Athanassiou and Kostopoulos (2010).
