Arctomys flaviventer was named by Audubon and Bachman (1841). It is extant.

It was recombined as Marmota flaviventris by Trouessart (1904), Howell (1914), Figgins (1915), Howell (1915), Grinnell (1921), Warren (1934), Schultz and Howard (1935), Frase and Hoffmann (1980), Kurten and Anderson (1980) and Hall (1981).
